Self-Portraits on Film

By and of Nina Tadic

"In the past year, I've really taken to shooting film. I love how much every shot matters, and I love how long it takes to get the final product. In shooting film, I've found a new love for black and white photography, and a new love for the use of shadows, light, and conceptual tension in photography."

"I've been looking into work by a variety of well-known photographers, and the two that I always come back to are Francesca Woodman and Ralph Gibson. Woodman's self-portraits, along with her portraits of other people, are something that I feel are so vulnerable, so open, so curious, and so raw, and that's something I've always wanted to do with my photography. Ralph Gibson's style of shooting, his style of printing, and his meticulous use of natural lighting, have pushed me so much to pay attention to detail in my photos. In looking at work by these two, I have found the confidence to try to emulate their work and take inspiration for my own."

"I made these photos this past Sunday, on a day that I had not left my bed, after being disgustingly sick for about four days. I felt weak and tired and worn out, and I had a bad case of cabin fever, but I wanted to take photos that dug past that and showed beautiful and intriguing use of light and concepts and circumstances. I think that these self-portraits are a wonderful step in the direction I want to go with my portrait work, and a great homage to Woodman and Gibson's works. I hope you are as intrigued by them as I am."
